A Historical Legacy

Kino Arsenal – A Bastion of Independent Cinema

A Historical Legacy

Kino Arsenal, a renowned institution for film and video art located in the heart of Berlin, boasts a rich history dating back to 1970. Its name, Arsenal, draws inspiration from the silent film classic "Arsenal" directed by Oleksandr Dovzhenko, paying homage to the enduring legacy of experimental cinema.

A Cultural Hub

Since 2000, Kino Arsenal has found its home within the Sony Centre, a vibrant cultural hub in central Berlin. This modern setting serves as a canvas for showcasing experimental video art, classic films, and cinematic gems from around the globe. The cinema's commitment to diversity and inclusivity has made it a beloved destination for cinephiles and art enthusiasts alike.

A Home for Independent Film

Kino Arsenal operates not only as a cinema but also as a film archive, distribution center, and the creative force behind two independent Berlinale sections: Forum and Forum Expanded. These initiatives champion emerging filmmakers, unconventional narratives, and thought-provoking documentaries, fostering a vibrant independent film scene in the city.

A New Chapter

In 2024, Kino Arsenal will embark on a new chapter as it relocates from Filmhaus am Potsdamer Platz to the Westhalle of the silent green Kulturquartier. This move marks an exciting transformation for the institution, providing it with a state-of-the-art facility where it can continue to showcase groundbreaking films and inspire future generations of filmmakers.
