Kayla Epstein Reports from New York City
A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck near New York City on Friday morning, rattling residents and causing minor damage. The quake, which occurred at 5:06 a.m., was centered about 10 miles northeast of Staten Island, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake was felt throughout the city, with reports of shaking in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Some residents reported feeling the quake as far away as New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage, but the quake did cause some minor damage to buildings and infrastructure. Some buildings in Manhattan and Brooklyn reported cracked windows and plaster, and some roads were closed due to debris.
The USGS said that the quake was the largest to hit the New York City area since a magnitude 5.0 quake in 2011. However, the USGS said that the risk of a larger earthquake in the near future is low.
