Hurricane Nicole Battered Florida, Leaving a Path of Destruction
Late-Season Storm Brings Widespread Power Outages, Flooding
Hurricane Nicole, the third November hurricane on record to make landfall in Florida, brought widespread destruction to the state as it moved through the peninsula on Thursday. The storm made landfall as a tropical storm in the Florida Panhandle, but its large size extended its impacts from the Bahamas and Florida northward.
At Least Two Deaths Reported
As of Thursday morning, at least two deaths have been reported in connection with the storm. One person was killed in Orange County when a tree fell on their home, and another person died in Volusia County after being swept away by floodwaters.
Widespread Power Outages
Hurricane Nicole caused widespread power outages across Florida. At the height of the storm, more than 800,000 customers were without power. As of Thursday morning, power has been restored to most areas, but some outages remain.
Flooding and Other Impacts
In addition to power outages, Hurricane Nicole also caused flooding and other damage. The storm surge flooded coastal areas, and high winds toppled trees and power lines. Schools and businesses were closed across the state, and many roads were impassable.
Hurricane Nicole is a reminder that even late-season storms can be dangerous. It is important to be prepared for hurricanes and other severe weather events.
